Yes! Before we look at why, here's a quick review of what happens in the body during stress.
The stress response activates the sympathetic nervous system which sets in motion a series of changes that takes energy from one area of the body and delivers it to another. The result is that we have the strength and energy to fight or flee from the lions and tigers and bears (oh my).
When in the fight-or-flight mode, muscle tension increases and surface blood vessels contract making us look gaunt and pale. Nonessential body systems are suppressed, such as digestion, reproduction, and the immune system. Absorption of nutrients is inhibited and the body becomes dehydrated.
Humans were not designed for long-term stress.
The stress response was originally about one thing--survival. But today instead of lions and tigers and bears, we have deadlines, traffic, and bills (oh #&%$). The demands of our modern world are less physical and more mental and emotional, and we manage to keep ourselves in a heightened stress state.
On-going stress weakens the immune system, causes digestive issues, and stalls reproduction. All of which becomes visible in our largest organ first—the skin, particularly the face, where skin is the thinnest.
Think this all sounds too strange? When you visit your doctor, what's the first exam she/he does? Visual! The doctor takes you by the chin, turns your face from side-to-side checking your skin for telltale signs of what's going on in your body.
So does stress show on the left side of the face first?
In her research, Cindy discovered that along with the physiological changes that take place in the body, the two brain hemispheres also play a roll. The left-brain (logical, memory) controls the right side of the body; and the right-brain (creative, emotions) controls the left. The bottom line is that emotional stress such as worry, fear, and resentment overworks the right hemisphere. Simply put, it means the left side of the face and body experiences more impact from emotional stress.
Cindy Kubica is one of the leading authorities on reading facial stress.
As co-owner of a commercial photography studio, Cindy has studied thousands of photos and observed the outward physical effects that stress creates. Cindy is currently conducting a study with her business partner, Farris Poole to show that even brain hemisphere dominance shows in the face.
"Proof can be seen in photos, says Cindy. "Our face is the road map of our lives. You can lie to yourself about how stress is impacting your life and health, but the face tells the real story. Remember, you're born with the face God gave you and you die with the face you've earned."
If you can see changes in the face from stress, then it's only a matter of time before it shows up in the body.
